Did you ever crave a little something to eat before calling it a day? Maybe a bowl of ice cream as a bedtime snack or a bar of chocolate before going to bed?

You may not be aware that there are some calories you’re taking in by doing that and you may not realize that what you eat at night might be affecting your sleep, even your overall health. Furthermore, if you can’t find the urge to take a heavy meal right before bed, eating heavy foods before sleeping can put a strain on your digestive system. Late-night eating can also lead to weight gain.

On the other hand, when it comes sleep quality, some people can eat before bed and have a great night’s sleep. But others, even if they have just a couple of bites, their sleep is negatively impacted by eating before bed.

Experts say, consuming these foods in particular before going to be only makes your health worse;

Alcohol

Just because alcohol makes you drowsy, doesn’t mean it will give you revitalizing sleep. A good and satisfying sleep should include 6 to 7 cycles of eye movement. Alcohol prevents that from happening.

Chicken

While chicken is a good source of protein, this is not recommended to eat before bedtime. The large amount of protein in chicken can slow down digestion by as much as 50%. Eating chicken before bed can keep your body working to digest food, making it difficult for you to fall asleep.

Beans

This vegetable encourages flatulence and tummy troubles before bed. Avoid these foods to prevent late-night abdominal discomfort.

Chocolate

Chocolate contains caffeine and theobromine, which is not something you want to eat right before bedtime. These components in chocolates both works to stimulate the nervous system, thus causes an increased heart rate, making it difficult for you to fall asleep.
